According to a report given on NPR this morning, the European Union bans the sale of U.S. beef within its jurisdiction. The stated reason for this ban is that American beef contains unsafe levels of growth hormones. The EU has found a link between beef hormone and cancer. The US rejects this position. Farmers allege that the hormone is used to increase cattle weight and effecient feeding. Some people contend that a few farmers were willing to reduce the levels of hormones in their cattle, but the US government nixed the concession because they did not want to create a stir among the public. As many of us know the US Beef industy is an extremely effective lobby. So my question to you is this...
If the beef industry has the ability to persuade the government to allow cancer-causing growth chemicals in the food we eat, could the beef industry also be behind the Atkins (low-carb craze)?? The whole situation makes you think. Studies have shown that those who lose weight on a low-carb diet lose the roughly the same amount of weight as those on calorie restriction diets over the course of 1 year. However, there are not many studies published to determine the long-term effects of a low-carb diet on heart health. However, this has been a boon to the beef industry. Are they behind the low-carb craze??
Disclaimer - I am just a curious beef-eating individual who knew nothing about the amount of cancer-causing growth hormones in beef.
